Slaughter Movie House: 'Jacob' and 'Burn'

In order to kick off October properly, Monday, October 1st, we are screening Jacob and Burn at Czar Bar in KCMO.  You may be thinking, “What? Two movies this time?!?!”  I have recently decided to screen a short film at each SMH, along with the feature length.  There will be a couple prize packs raffled off that include: a Burn DVD, Jacob poster signed by Larry Wade Carrell (Director/Writer/Actor), and a Dear God No! button designed by Lou Rusconi.  Plus, I have TONS of tickets to give away to Hammerween III.

Jacob is a good 'ol Texas film.  I mean that in every sense: Larry Wade Carrell was born and raised in Alvin, TX, the film is set in Texas, and shot in Richmond and Rosenberg, Texas.  And if you know me at all, you know I dig this a lot. Jacob is disturbed boy, in a really f**ked up back woods family, who doesn't cope very well, and goes straight for brutal revenge.

A few weeks ago I went to HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis, which had a phenomenal film festival within it.  I saw so many amazing shorts there, that I knew I had to bring them back to Kansas City!  Not only that, I met so many great people there, I've been inspired by their creativity.  And that brings me to Burn, a short by Jerry Pyle, from Indiana but now resides in L.A.  I knew I had to get this film quickly because it would fit well along side JacobBurn is only 5 minutes long and I feel there is little I can say without spoiling it. What Burn leaves your imagination to figure out is part of the magic in it.  Not to mention it is the most intense 5 minutes I've ever witnessed.

A huge thank you to Berry Anderson and the Pitch Weekly, who gave this screening a great write up.  Read it here.

Elvira's Horror Hunt at HorrorHound Weekend

The film fest was kicked off with Teddy, a short by Steve Goltz and Kevin Sommerfield.  Teddy is an 80's style camping slasher with a hint of I Know What You Did Last Summer. So if you know me at all, you know I loved it. I hope to screen it at Slaughter!

The films were judged by Bill Moseley, Sybill Danning, and Joe Bob Briggs. The winners of the Best Short and Best Feature were flown out to LA on Thursday, the 13th, for a premier screening of both films hosted by the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira, presented by Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo. The winners were Found (feature) and Other (short)! Found also won Best Actor and Best Director (Feature). I can not wait to watch.

Peaches Christ, Elvira, Scott Schirmer (director), and the cast of Found

I did have a chance to see Other and wow. This is unlike anything I have ever seen. The synopsis: “Patrick is a brilliant doctor in an obsessive race to alter his own grim prognosis. During a series of unconventional experiments, he discovers a scientific loophole unlike anything he had ever imagined. In pursuit of this dark prize, Patrick will risk everything to ensure he sees his experiment to the end...even if it means accepting the sinister results.” Having lost someone to a disease I understand the want to go to ridiculous lengths to buy time and although this film takes it to a place that is more fantasy then reality, I could connect to it. And in hindsight, I realize it is so much more than that. Other swept the entire show: Best Short, Best Director (Short), Best Screenplay, and Best Score.
Check out the trailer HERE.

Nailbiter: Best Cinematography and Best Creature.

Dear God NO!: Best Body Count and Midnight Monster Movie.

Dead Weight: Best Editing.

Baby-Sitting, a short by Lucas Masson from France, won Best Gore. I am very excited to check this out.

HorrorHound Weekend

September 7-9th, 2012 at the Marriot Indianapolis East.
www.horrorhoundweekend.com

I am very much looking forward to this weekend!  It will be my first HorrorHound Weekend.  I'm staying with the Dear God No! crew, so please pray for my safety.

Guests: Linda Hamliton (Terminator), Timothy Balme (Dead Alive), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Anthony Michael Hall (Edward Scissorhands), Heather Langenkamp (Nightmare on Elm Street), Michael Beihn (Terminator, Aliens), Edward Furlong (American History X), a Monster Squad reunion, Night of the Living Dead reunion and tons more.

Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, will also be there and is presenting the film fest awards Saturday night.  Like I have said before, a lot of my friends films are screening there: Nailbiter, Dead Weight, and Dear God No!  I predict Friday night to be insane, because all 3 of those films are playing, and in that order.  With DGN being last and known for their partying, the late night festivities shall be entertaining to say the least.

HorrorHound Weekend is featuring a Mask-Fest with artist like: the Chiodo brothers (Killer Klowns, Critters and Team America), Daniel Roebuck (Devils Rejects, Final Destination, Halloween), Tom Savini (Friday the 13th) and more.  I'm very excited to see what they will have displayed!

My favorite thing to see at cons are the unique and immaculate costumes, I hope HorrorHound is festive in that way.
